Hewlett-Packard Official Printer Handbook
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (10 June, 1999)
Author: Mark L. Chambers
Average review score:

What a disappointment
When I came across this book on Amazon.com, before it was available, I was very excited. As a computer maintenance technician whose knowledge is rather slack in the area of printers, I was very happy to see what I thought was a brand new book on printer maintenance coming out. Other books on the subject that I have browsed at Amazon seem to be rather dated: 1996 or even earlier. And the fact that it was Hewlett-Packard was gravy -- just about all of the printers under my care are HP models. What could be better than an HP printer handbook?

So you can imagine my dismay when the book finally became available and I got to read the above spiel from the author. Not what I had in mind at all. Gee, a whole book devoted to choosing a printer -- just what the world needs. I recently got a chance to take a look at this book at a local bookstore and it was even sadder than I imagined. When is someone finally going to write an updated printer MAINTENANCE book?

Finally a book on printers for regular people!
Most of the books that I have looked at in bookstores on printers have been full of technical jargon and very little information that I needed. With a little bit of reading, this book finally answered many of my questions and gave me ideas on what to do with my new Epson inkjet. It leads you step by step through most common chores too.

Beginner book with plenty of answers
I needed a printer for my first computer system, and this book told me all about what to look for during my visits to the stores. There's plenty of information here and my kids are trying out the crafts. It is a very complete book and I rate it four stars. I have bought several computer books to help me with Windows and my new Pentium 2 and this was the easiest to understand and had the most answers. I will recommend it to my friends and family, the author did a good job.

And it is Lucy's birthday this week.Melanie thinks she is the best bully in the school, and her companions are Vicky and Sally-Ann.Angus trys to help Lucy and he made a plan to get back at Melanie.

A book about school and being bullied
The Present Takers by Aidan Chambers, was about a girl called Lucy who is bullied by a gang who take girls presents when it is their birthday. Lucy and her friend Angus make a plan to stop the gang. I give this book 7 out of 1o.

A sad book about being bullied
The Present Takers is a very sad book but very interesting book to read.I thought the book was very well written but Aidan Chambers should of put more happy parts in it.

Puzzled
I am puzzled as to why another reader of this book rated it so badly. I find the text a little heavy to grasp at first but this book belongs to a series of up to date texts bringing to the attention of the reader important discoveries and concepts in this field. I think to rate the book you must consider the fact that it is one collection in a series of collections of papers on virology that are detailed and for a scientific audience. Personally, I found the books an excellent reference.

Chambers 21st Century Dictionary
Published in Hardcover by Larousse (October, 1997)
Authors: Mairi Robinson, George Davidson, and Chambers
Average review score:

Not as Good As Last Century's Chamber's Dictionary
I was expecting an update to Chamber's Dictionary (formerly Chambers 20th Century Dictionary) and was very disappointed. It seems that many words have disappeared from the English language as we move into the 21st Century. While easier on the eyes it does not cover as many words as the earlier edition. Don't buy this if you are looking for a good crossword puzzle dictionary.

An excellent dictionary that is easy on the eye.
I am no lexicographer, but this is definitely one of the better dictionaries in terms of ease of use, layout, and print quality. It is smaller (and thus more convenient to handle) than the American Heritage or Merriam-Webster college editions but still packs almost 1,700 pages. The entries include many examples and concise, straightforward etymological notes. I particularly like this dictionary because of its clean layout, the quality of its paper, and its typeface: they make the dictionary much more readable than most dictionaries. Of course, it serves mainly British English, but American spelling is included. Definitely recommended by this reader.

Complete Sonatas for Solo Instruments and Piano: 3 Violin Sonatas, Scherzo for Violin and Piano, 2 Cello Sonatas, 2 Clarinet (Viola Sonatas)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (October, 1989)
Authors: Johannes Brahms and Hans Gal
Average review score:

Why its not good
I have been playing the piano for a total of fifty two years and eight months now, and i can't say i've ever seen a piece of music with a greater lack of flow.

Very good edition!
This is a very good edition which I recommend to any music lover. The music does not need any comment: Brahms' chamber music is always intense and melodic.
This edition has many benefits over other books: (1) it is quite cheap, (2) noteheads are large and clearly visible, (3) Hans Gal has made a very accurate edition, and in the introduction he lists every source text used together with interesting "alternative" passages found in Brahms' autographs.

The Great Haydn Quartets: Their Interpretation
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (June, 1995)
Author: Hans Keller
Average review score:

Virtually worthless for the listener
Perhaps if you are a performer there might be something worthwhile in this book. But as a guide to listening to and comprehending the Haydn quartets, this book is virtually worthless. Once you get past the author's self-congratulatory breast-beating and his unsupported opinions about how few ensembles can play these pieces well (always excepting, of course, ensembles trained by the author), there's precious little left.

One of the world's great musical books--do buy it !
As a professional violinist with the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields I can assure you that an enormous amount of wisdom, insight and brilliant musical writing is crammed into this book. If you want to know what insightful musical writing can be buy this tome!

Microsoft Office v. X for Mac Power User's Guide
Published in Paperback by Premier Press, Inc. (02 January, 2002)
Author: Mark L. Chambers
Average review score:

Microsoft Getting Started in Office X in softcover.
This book is simply a nicely printed version of the very limited info that comes on the Office v X CD ROM "Getting Started" file. They really mean just getting started. This book is a little bit expanded with a few nubbins of extra detail, but not much. This is NOT a Power User's Guide. A guide for a beginner to both Office and OS X, at best, with some glaring missing areas.

Useful in case you just like to have a printed version of the bare basics instead of needing to use or print out the electronic help/info.pdf material which is basic at best. A more readable and accessible version of the electronic material. If you've been using earlier versions of Office, you don't need this book. I bought it only because I've skipped two Office version generations, but the basics don't seem to have changed much.

There is some useful expansion of the Entourage procedures particularly on the Calendar which is good, beyond the CD ROM material.

Entourage e-mail is essentially identical with the outstanding OS X Mail package which is nicely described in Pogue's OS X: The Missing Manual. If Entourage is new to you as it is to me, you may find the additional detail handy.

I haven't found any reason to go to the trouble of shifting my mail to Entourage from the extremely useful OS X Mail system. Unless you don't start with OS X Mail before you buy Office, you may not find the Entourage mail material of any use.

This book should be avoided if you plan to exploit the many facets of Office, a great many of which are either unknown to the author or never used by him. For instance, the basics of creating mailing labels, a common and very useful function, is treated only lightly and then only as using an existing address book as merge data as a project. Nary a word on how to create individual or a sheet of mailing labels from scratch, or using Avery or other label formats, a fatal deficiency for what purports to be a "Power User" guide...

An exceptional book for all Mac Office X users
This book is really a complete guide, with a smooth ramp-up from the basics to Office tips about power features that I didn't even know existed. I can hardly wait to try some of the more complex features of Word and Excel, which is why I really upgraded to MacOS X in the first place.

I especially liked the author's step-by-step style. He shows you precisely what needs to be done to accomplish what you need to do. Also, there are projects that illustrate the things that most of us will do, like creating a self-running PPoint show or building a complete web site with Word.

Another thing I appreciated about this book was the starting point! You don't have to wade through several chapters of "this is how you move your mouse" and "this is what happens when you click a menu" (as some other books that I have do). Plus, he just doesn't say "This is taken care of by a wizard" .... he actually shows you what to do.

Rather than waste time on MacOS X Mail (even in the Jaguar beta it's nowhere near as powerful as Entourage), the author describes all of Entourage. There's a lot to it, and he shows you how to track all of your personal data and appointments. You don't have to be an accountant to understand the Excel coverage, and everything that the new version of Word can do. The chapters are well-organized, and I never felt like I had to hunt something down.

To sum up, I highly recommend this excellent book to any person of any skill level who needs a complete guide to the new Mac Office!

Modern Corporate Finance: Theory and Practice
Published in Hardcover by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (January, 1994)
Authors: Donald R. Chambers and Nelson J. Lacey
Average review score:

So basic as to be insulting and it's boring to boot.
This book was used in an MBA class at UMASS. Goes to show you what the MBA program is like there. And this Lacey guy is the head of finance. Go to Tuck.

This is a wonderful book on basic corporate finance
Hello finance teachers - if you are looking for a basic corporate finance book for undergraduate finance majors, this is it. You will get better evaluations using this book then using the Ross book. This is a great book that undergraduate finance majors love. Unlike most other books on this subject, this one is very concise, clear, and understandable. I wish more finance books were written that were so clear and to the point.

The Operational Auditing Handbook : Auditing Business Processes
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (August, 1997)
Authors: Andrew Chambers and Graham Rand
Average review score:

This book is very overpriced.
The cost of this book greatly outweighs its value. For information on operational auditing, I would look somewhere else.

A very good auditing handbook
"The Operational Auditing Handbook" is a very good and practical manual on auditing. It's accompanying software is easy to customize. The audit checklists are very accurate and experienced based. I put it on the same level as "Operational Profitability; Conducting Management Audits."

50 Years of Rock Music (Chambers Compact Reference Series)
Published in Paperback by Chambers (September, 1992)
Authors: Philippe Paraire and Chambers
Average review score:

Incomplete and biased...
I won't dwell long on this book, suffice to say that while it's mostly well-written and competently-researched, it is VERY incomplete and there are some blatant inaccuracies. And how can SADE be considered an influence of any sort in music when others such as Marc Bolan and Madness (The Beat have a small section and The Specials are mentioned in a sentence, but no Madness... that's unforgiveable!) are not even mentioned at all. All in all, it's an entertaining read for the most part, but hardly accurate and justified in its lack of knowledge on ALL aspects of music!
